Mapping the historic environment using documentary sources, historic maps and GIS data
In 2009 the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB embarked on a project to create Historic Environment Action Plans for its landscape
A core part of this project was to map, analyse and display the key aspects of the historic environment at a landscape scale. This involved:
- Extracting information from four Historic Environment Records, creating a new dataset and mapping key archaeological sites by monument and site types
- Querying and interpreting Historic Landscape Characterisation Data
- Importing historic maps, rectifying them, anaylsing them and creating new vector based spatial layers to, for example, map the location of historic mills in the AONB
- Transforming documentary evidence into a spatial format. For example creating a new map of landownership using the Victoria County History
